Yesterday, white fascist/Nazi supremists, goaded on by outgoing US President Trump, assaulted the global symbol of democracy the American Capital Building in Washington DC.
What we witnessed was the dark side of democracy and its freedoms. A democracy allows the voices of those who would do away with it and this extremism is allowed to exist as it is most often drowned out by the moderate majority. But here is a case were extremists, given a broad enough forum to express their views, gather enough power, legitimate or iligitimate, for themselves to begin to believe they can determine the broader social narrative to their way of thinking and belief. We have had experience with this. History has shown us what will happen if good people do nothing. The cost was high when finally the moderate majority fought to have its thinking and beliefs become the norm. We must not let this happen again. With resolve the moderate majority must regain control and push the extremists to the shadows once again.
That’s the problem and the frightening aspect of zealotry, extremists are willing to lose everything, the rest of us are not. But, in order to fight them, which we must, we, too, must be willing to lose everything. If bullets were to start flying, it would be a short exchange as these extremists would soon melt away as they usually do. Well, that’s the thing isn’t it? It’s a constant struggle and one cannot simply cast a ballot and walk away. Democracy requires constant vigilance and diligence. If the people snooze then the criminals try to take over. By its very nature with democracy comes a certain degree of disorder and chaos as it tries to accommodate everyone’s needs and wants. Those who hate what they see as chaos wish order, especially order of their making, in their image.
